Hybrid Spiral Ankle-Foot Orthosis

The Nyloplex spiral ankle-foot orthosis developed over a decade ago was designed to assist in the transfer of potential energy to kinetic energy to obtain controlled transverse rotation and plantar and dorsiflexion of the foot. The orthosis maintains remarkable control of the foot, but its durability is questionable. A new hybrid spiral orthosis utilizes a Nyloplex insert partially encased in polypropylene. Fabrication techniques are discussed. Initial results from a test group of patients indicate the hybrid orthosis is durable and performs with the efficacy of the original Nyloplex spiral orthosis.
