Short Ankle-Foot Orthosis

DOUGLAS GABOURIE, OTR***, AND NORRIS CARROLL, MD, FRCS(C)Toronto, Canada

The short ankle-foot orthosis controls hindfoot varus or valgus, forefoot supination or pronation, and forefoot adduction or abduction. It is frequently prescribed after clubfoot surgery to maintain the position obtained. In this instance, the orthosis is designed to keep the heel in neutral position and to control forefoot adduction and supination. The short ankle-foot orthosis does not interfere with ankle motion and is worn in a regular sport shoe. Casting technique, cast modification, and fitting procedure were described.
