J. MARTIN CARLSON, MS (ENG), CPO*, MARK PAYETTE, AND,br />LOWELL LUTTER, MDSaint Paul, Minnesota

Few believe that special seating and/or orthotic spinal support can deter the progression of spinal deformities in children with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Nevertheless, an approach developed and used at Gillette Children's Hospital has, during the past two years, produced extraordinary short-term results. The biomechanical principles and the design of the devices used, as well as other essential facets (education, training, follow-up) necessary for a successful program, were described.
