Use of a Brim-Casting Fixture for the Narrow ML Above-Knee Socket
DANIEL L. SHAMP, CPO*** AND JOANNE KLOPE SHAMP, CPONorton, Ohio
A Narrow ML (Medio-Lateral) Socket with containment of the ischial tuberosity has been fitted to 100 above-knee amputees. The increased comfort and improved function attributed to a normal femoral adduction angle and full hip range of motion accounts for excellent patient acceptance. A brim fixture and instruction manual were designed and used for the casting and modification process. Fabrication may be either by means of the standard laminated resins for a rigid socket or polyethylene for a flexible socket. The brim fixture has made the fitting of the Narrow ML Socket easily learned by the prosthetist familiar with the quadrilateral design, and allows positive, consistent results with a minimal use of check sockets in the fitting process.
