Effective and comprehensive family-oriented educational materials on the limb-deficient child are limited. Parents and clients demand detailed information and clarification on long-term medical management and treatment, effect on growth and development, parents' tasks and responsibilities, and community and national resources. A collaborative project was initiated between the Area Child Amputee Center's and La Rabida's program administrators to produce a series of three booklets. They address the optimal independence of the limb-deficient child based on three distinct child developmental periods, interrelating issues of orthopedic and prosthetic needs, parenting skills, and identification of resources. The project was funded by Variety Club International, National March of Dimes, and the West Michigan Chapter of the March of Dimes. A complementary set of booklets will be distributed to each ACPOC member institution. The booklets will be useful in many health care settings, from specialty clinics and private physicians' offices, to public health and school programs.
