Surlyn Socket Design for the Young Child

EUGENE BANZIGER, CP(C)

Surlyn sockets have gotten much attention and good results with adults. The goal was not so much the flexibility of the socket but rather its improved wearing comfort. I have fitted 15 children with Surlyn sockets and the results have been excellent. Lightness and wearing comfort of the new plastic are the primary benefits to young children. Belowelbow, above-elbow, below-knee, above-knee, Symes, knee disarticulation, and proximal femoral focal deficiency prostheses have been fitted to children as young as I year of age. In all cases, the responses from patients and parents were very positive. The wearing comfort was improved by the reduced weight and greater heat dissipation. Also, sizing changes and adjustments can be accomplished in a very short period of time, which reduced "off time" of the appliances.
