Total Suction for Toddlers Too!

LOUIS EKUS, CPO*

Classically, total suction above-knee prosthetic fittings have not been provided for toddlers because they would grow out of the sockets too quickly and the parents must assist the child to don and doff the prosthesis. After much discussion with parents we decided to attempt total suction fittings. Our success with both bilateral and unilateral patients indicates that the problems anticipated with young children are not a cause for concern. Complications with the technique include parents' training in donning and prosthesis and adjustment time for the child. The greatest advantage is the ability of the child to wear a prosthesis or prostheses without belts or straps that complicate toilet training. Above-knee total suction fittings have succeeded for children as early as 2 years of age, including both unilateral and bilateral cases.
