Training Children with Below-Elbow Prostheses

BOB RADOCY, MS*

The presentation consists of selected excerpts from a new videotape on children's body-powered prosthetics. The tape was produced by Colorado State University, Fort Collins and offers an in-depth illustration of children, ages infant through 8 years, using body-powered prostheses. Conventional voluntary-opening and newer voluntary-closing technologies are compared. The film comprehensively covers fabrication, fitting, harnessing, and emphasizes training with various prostheses. Additionally, interviews with parents and therapists lend insight into special family concerns and psychological aspects of limb deficiency. Educationally-oriented, the film is a training tool, delving into terminology and concepts for medical personnel.
