A Cosmetic Syme Type Prosthesis for Children with Poor Heel Pads

Over the past five years we have experienced an increase in the numbers of amputations in young people caused by agricultural machinery. Two of these children have ankle disarticulations with absent heel pads and limited end bearing ability. PTB design Syme prostheses function well for these children but cosmesis poses a problem. Most Syme prostheses consist either of a slip socket or flexible liner changing the outline of the socket from a bulbous to a conical shape, or of trapdoor and external straps. The design we successfully used consists of one piece laminated frames reinforced by carbon fibre and with Surlyn liner and a foam cover. This design provides excellent cosmesis but does not compromise function and is applicable to most ankle disarticulation patients.
