Four-Year Follow-Up Study of the KIR Modular Below-Elbow Prosthesis for Children

An adjustable, modular, below-elbow prosthesis was developed at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in 1980. The prosthesis was designed to simplify maintenance and to accommodate growth by being readily adjustable. The all-plastic prosthesis has a removable socket, a pylon attaching the socket to an adjustable wrist unit, and a removable exoskeletal forearm. The results of a four year follow-up study of several patients are presented. The data focuses on the following: increased life expectancy of the prosthesis, the efficiency of prosthetic adjustments and reduced hours of prosthetic management. The results of the study indicate this is a viable approach to pediatric upper-limb prosthetic management.
