Modified Van Nes Rotationplasty as a Reconstructive Procedure Following Musculoskeletal Tumor Resection

Reconstruction of a functional limb following local resection of musculoskeletal tumors still represents a formidable problem in cases involving children. This is particularly the case in patients with large tumors involving soft tissues, the articular end of the bone or skin, and also in patients with failed primary reconstruction. Eleven patients with this difficult problem had modified Van Nes rotationplasty. All regained functional range of movement and strength in the turned-around ankle joint. All, except one who died 8 months following the surgery for metastatic disease, became good "below-knee" prosthetic users. The surgical procedure, its modification, and functional results are demonstrated.
