Reciprocating Gait Orthosis: A Difficult Fitting

Through a case presentation the orthotist and therapist will challenge current criteria for prescription of the reciprocating gait orthosis at The Hugh MacMillan Medical Centre. Assessment, fabricating and fitting of the reciprocating gait orthosis to patients with hip flexion contractures beyond 40 degrees with severe lordosis are highlighted. The concept of incorporating single-uptight knee joints into the vacuum-formed plastic is reviewed with emphasis on attaining a lightweight, yet structurally sound, orthosis. A videotape demonstrates the advantages of this orthosis over previously prescribed devices.
