Surlyn Sockets for Below-Elbow Myoelectric Prostheses

Surlyn has been used widely for upper- and lower-limb check sockets and for definitive flexible socket systems, now including above-knee ischial containment socket designs and myoelectric sockets. We used a definitive Surlyn self-suspending socket because it takes less fabrication time, is less expensive, is easily adjusted, is durable, is flexible proximally, and is hygienic. The amputation limb is examined for tissue density, range of motion, and muscle strength. Myotesting is performed to insure minimum microvoltage threshold, control ability, and electrode site placement. After molding the amputation limb, the cast is poured and modified, and a Surlyn check socket is fabricated to evaluate fit, comfort, and range of motion. Surlyn is then vacuum formed to create the definitive socket. Polyester resin is used to laminate the forearm section. Modular components are attached to the forearm shell and socket and the prosthesis is ready for fitting. Fabrication requires 8 hours.
