Hip Disarticulation Prosthesis for Infants

A hip disarticulation prosthesis was designed for a 9 month old boy with congenital total absence of the right leg. The prosthesis incorporated modular endoskeletal principles and provided cosmetic acceptability with fun hip and knee function, ease of application and removal, low maintenance through simple design, allowance for adjustment for length above and below the knee, and an automatic knee locking system. Components were custom made because no very small units are commercially available.
The patient was able to stand with assistance, balance on both feet without assistance, walk with a walker, sit, crawl, and kneel without major problems. The same components can be adapted easily for above-knee and knee disarticulation prostheses.
