Methods of Gait Evaluation

Gait evaluation is necessary for diagnosis and therapeutic decision-making. The specific surgery, orthosis, prosthesis, therapy or medications are decided, and then evaluated, depended on the evaluation results. Visual evaluation is highly dependent on experience, and the speed of walking makes accuracy unsatisfactory.
Additions to visual evaluation now include recording techniques such as normal, slow or stop motion photography or videotaping; timing switches and walkways; pressure sensors on the foot, shoe, or walkway; surface electromyography; optoelectronic motion analysis; electro- and mechanical goniometers; accelerometers-, and energy cost analyzers.
