ACPOC 2016 Annual Meeting Hector Kay Lecture and Presidential Guest Speaker:
Hector Kay Lecture Melissa Stockwell: In 2002, Melissa graduated from the University of Colorado and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army as part of the Transportation Corps. In March 2004, she deployed with the 1st Cavalry Division to Baghdad, Iraq. On April 13, 2004, she was on a routine convoy when her HUMVEE was hit by a roadside bomb. The blast resulted in the amputation of her left leg above the knee and she became the first female to ever lose a limb in active combat. After a year of rehab at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, she went on to swim in the 2008 Beijing Paralympics and turned to the sport of triathlon in 2009. She is a 3x Paratriathlon World Champion with her sights set on competing at the Paralympics in Rio in 2016. She is a certified prosthetist with Scheck and Siress Prosthetics, the co-founder of the Chicago based Dare2tri Paratriathlon club, a motivational speaker and a new mom. Her story is about overcoming obstacles, perseverance and realizing that we can all be greater than the great person we already are.
Presidential Guest Speaker Gregory Dumanian, MD: Dr. Dumanian is the Chief of Plastic Surgery at the Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine. A graduate of the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, his training was in surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, plastic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, and hand surgery at the Curtis Center in Baltimore. He co-developed and first performed the procedure now called "Targeted Muscle Reinnervation" with Dr. Todd Kuiken, physiatrist and researcher at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. His current interests are in the surgical treatment of neuroma pain in amputees using TMR style nerve transfers, and the development of novel sutures for high tension internal closures.
